Adobe Reader / PDF Files

The County standard for posting documents and forms online is Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). To open a PDF, you must have the latest version of the free Adobe Reader. If after downloading the reader and reviewing the information below you still can not open a PDF, you can visit the Adobe Reader Support page.

Opening A PDF

In most cases, you only need to click the document link to open it. Netscape Version 4.77 or later and Internet Explorer 5.0 or later users will see the document open in a browser window. You do not need to launch the Adobe Reader separately. See below if you would like to download and save the document.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a known conflict between certain versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator and Adobe Acrobat Reader which causes PDF files not to display completely or not to display at all inside your browser window. To solve this problem, configure your computer to display PDF's in a separate Adobe Acrobat application, rather than within a browser window.

Downloading a PDF

You can download a PDF to your hard drive and open it with the Adobe Reader. This will allow you have a copy for offline viewing or as a backup copy. Right-click your mouse on the link and select the "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As..." option. You will be asked where to save the file on your hard drive and bypass the Acrobat Reader browser plug-in. Use Adobe Reader to open the file after downloading.

Browser Configuration

You can configure your browser so that PDF files are launched in the reader, not in the browser. Refer to the Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat help files for instructions.

AOL Browser Users

While the AOL browser does support the Adobe Acrobat Reader, some versions of the browser have a technical problem within the browser that prevents it from displaying PDF files online. This means that if you are using AOL, you need to download the PDF file, save it to your hard drive and open it with the Adobe Acrobat Reader offline, or consider installing the latest versions of Internet Explorer or Firefox.
