Board of Zoning Adjustments

Alameda County Board of Supervisors established two Board of Zoning Adjustments, one for the East County unincorporated area and one for the West County unincorporated area, to hear all Variances and those Conditional Use Permits for which the Planning Commission is not the decision making authority.

The West County Board of Zoning Adjustments (WBZA) consist of five members, one nominated for San Lorenzo by the Supervisor for District 3, one each nominated from Castro Valley, Cherryland, and Fairview by the Supervisor for District 4, and one nominated jointly from Ashland or Hillcrest Knolls by the Supervisors for Districts 3 and 4. This Board has jurisdiction over Variances and Conditional Use Permits as noted above in the area west of the East County Area Plan western boundary, except for that portion of District 1 that extends south of I-580 and east of Palo Verde Road.

The Board (WBZA) generally meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The first monthly meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm and the second monthly meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:30pm. Meetings are held in the Public Hearing Room, 224 West Winton Avenue, Hayward.

The East County Board of Zoning Adjustments (EBZA) consists of three members, two nominated by the Supervisor for District 1 and one nominated jointly by Supervisors from Districts 1 and 2. All members reside in the jurisdictional area of that Board, and at least two have some agricultural background. This Board has jurisdiction over Variances and Conditional Use Permits as noted above in the East County Plan Area, as defined in the Alameda County General Plan, and in addition that portion of the District 1 south of I-580 and east of Palo Verde Road lying outside the Plan Area boundary.

The Board (EBZA) generally meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. The monthly meeting is scheduled to begin at 1:30pm. Meetings are held in the City of Pleasanton Council Chambers, 200 Old Bernal Road, Pleasanton.
