THE POSITION(S): The Vector Control classes are found in the Environmental Health Services Department of the Health Care Services Agency. Positions in this class series are responsible for the discovery, abatement and prevention of vector infestation in their assigned area. Vector Control Officer is the full journey-level position in the Vector Control series. Incumbents are responsible for carrying out their duties in assigned areas of the Vector Control Services District. Typical duties may include: mixing and placing poison baits, investigating infestation complaints and animal bites, advising on abatement and control procedures, inspection of public and private property, conducting dye tests and posting warning signs, trapping and dissecting rodents and collecting specimens, maintaining records. They are expected to be capable of performing field duties in an independent manner.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Vector Control Officer may advance by competitive examination to:

Senior Vector Control Officer - $1666.40 - Current Bi-Weekly Maximum.

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates.

EITHER I

EXPERIENCE: Six months as a Vector Control Officer, Trainee in the Alameda County service; or six months as a Vector Control Technician in a public agency.

OR II

One year of experience in vector or pest control work. (May include experience as a Vector Control Officer, Trainee with Alameda County.) Two years of relevant college course work in science or health is preferred.

LICENSE: Possession of a current California State Certificate as a Certified Technician in Vertebrate Invertebrate Vector Control OR a Structural Pest Control license for Field Representative, Branch II or a certificate as a Pesticide Applicator with the Department of Agriculture, Category K. All candidates must possess a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator's license and must submit copies of all licenses and certificates with application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Vision: Ability to distinguish primary colors in order to conduct dye tests. This ability will be tested during the County pre-employment physical examination.

Physical Ability: Must be able to pull utility access covers (which require 75-100 pounds force pull), climb ladders and lift 50 pounds. This ability may be tested in conjunction with the oral interview.

THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW CONTINUOUS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will last approximately one year but may be extended. This examination may be reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates merged onto the existing list according to examination score.

The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF vector-borne disease, breeding places and habits of insects and animal vectors particularly rodents, including ectoparasites such as fleas, and lice, as well as flies and cockroaches; methods of prevention and control of vector infestations, pesticide safety and hazards to non-target species; functions of an Environmental Health Services Department. ABILITY TO handle and dissect rodents, collect laboratory specimens and ectoparasites; obtain the voluntary cooperation of the public in vector prevention and control measures; handle and place poisons for rodent extermination effectively and safely; read, write and speak effectively.

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF a review of candidates' applications and supplemental questionnaires to verify possession of minimum qualifications. Those candidates who possess the minimum qualifications for the class will be placed on the eligible list based on an evaluation of education, training, and experience.
