THE POSITION(S): Deputy Probation Officer I is the entry-level
classification within the Deputy Probation Officer series in the Probation
Department. Incumbents work under close supervision. Deputy Probation Officer
I's perform investigative and supervisory work with juveniles and adults to aid
in their social rehabilitation. Their work includes making recommendations to
the courts, supervising probationers, and counseling boys and girls at the
County residential treatment facilities. Deputy Probation Officer I's must be
available to work all shifts and locations and must be willing to perform work
requiring irregular hours, holidays and weekends. Deputy Probation Officers
arrest clients who violate the law and terms of Probation and physically
restrain clients.

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to
the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements
does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the
examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other
candidates.
EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited
college or university in one of the behavioral sciences (sociology, psychology,
political science, criminal justice, ethnic studies, anthropology, public
administration, speech pathology), or a closely related field. (Official
College transcripts must be attached to the application. Failure to submit
transcripts will result in disqualification. Transcripts must be in sealed
envelope from Registrars Office.)
LICENSE: All candidates must possess a valid Class C California Motor
Vehicle Operator's license. Good driving record according to DMV negligent
operator guidelines and qualifications for automotive insurance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet all minimum standards
for Peace Officers under Section 1031 of the Government Code which includes:
Persons appointed to positions in this classification in the Probation
Department must be citizens of the United States or a permanent resident alien
who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship at least one year prior to
his/her application for employment. Must be at least 21 years of age at the
time of appointment. Graduated from high school, attained a satisfactory score
on a G.E.D. test or passed a California high school proficiency examination.
Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint
files to disclose a criminal record. Found free from any physical, emotional or
mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a
peace officer, as determined by a licensed examining authority in accordance
with the California Government Code. Within the prescribed time limit after
date of appointment, satisfactory completion of training for probation officers
as specified by the California Board of Corrections, Peace Officer Standards
and Training PC 832 and any other training required under law. Any felony
conviction is disqualifying. Willingness to perform work requiring irregular
hours, holidays and weekends.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicant must satisfactorily pass a thorough
medical examination for Peace Officers and a psychological evaluation before
job placement can take place. Employees currently employed in the Alameda
County Probation Department who hold a Peace Officer classification will not
have to complete a psychological evaluation in order to be eligible for
appointment.
THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW CONTINUOUS EXAMINATION. The eligible
list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will
last approximately one year but may be extended. This examination may be
reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates merged onto the
existing list according to examination score.
The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF
interviewing techniques; intermediate and basic math; principles of
supervision; applicable state, federal and local statutes, ordinances, rules,
and policies; training and learning theory techniques, including recreational
activity; counseling and guidance principles; principles of normal and abnormal
psychology and personality theory; principles, techniques and trends in social
and correctional case and group work; cultural relativity and cultural
differences. ABILITY TO communicate verbally with a variety of people
from various ethnic, educational and socio-economic backgrounds; speak in
public; prepare materials for oral presentations; interview effectively;
communicate in writing, including using proper grammar, punctuation and
spelling; define problems, collect information and draw conclusions; read and
interpret complex technical, legal and/or medical documents, codes, rules,
etc.; organize and manage a caseload; remain flexible under changing
circumstances; work under stress; demonstrate sensitivity in dealing with
others; establish rapport with clients and co-workers; restrain individual for
purposes of arrest and/or detention and conduct related searches; apply
restraint devices; administer first aid and CPR.
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following four steps: 1) A review
of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those
candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to
the next step in the examination process. 2) State Board of Corrections written
test which is pass/fail (weighted 30%). 3) A written exercise which will be
weighted as 20% of the candidate's final examination score. 4) A job-related
oral appraisal interview (weighted as 50%) which may include a job-related
situational exercises. CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH
PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION PROCESS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO THE NEXT STEP. WE
