Programs & Services - Training Unit
The nature of our service to the community necessitates training requirements that address competency, safety, record confidentiality, and reporting requirements for over 700 sworn and non-sworn staff. In 2004, the Training Unit offered 399 classes, or 21,856 training hours to Probation Department staff.
With the opening of the Las Vistas Training Center on Oct. 7, 2004, the Probation Department has endowed more cost-effective training for present and future staff. The Training Center includes audio-visual equipment in each classroom, a 12-station computer lab, inside and outside lounging areas with seating and a campus-like atmosphere.
The goal of the Training Unit is to develop and retain professional, well-trained staff. To this end, training for 2004-2005 targets both skill building and leadership development. "Back to Basics" training identifies basic skills germane to each job function, and provides short, intensified, on-the-job training to develop competent job skills. In collaboration with the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), the Department will offer "Management Development for the Future," to teach managers to "nurture the organizational culture so staff can pursue personal and professional growth."
