Greening the Forum
In keeping with the spirit of climate action, the organizing team took the following steps to green the Climate Forum. Please contact us with suggestions for how to make the next event even greener.
Transportation
- Selected central location in the County for event
- Selected location in walking distance from BART and bus
- Encouraged carpooling
- Provided transit and walking directions on website
Paper and Materials Reduction and Recycling
- Sent invitations by email and accepted RSVPs electronically only
- Made printed signs and banners with durable materials and did not print dates on them, so they can be reused
- Did not hand out folders or bags at registration
- Printed agendas, postcards, notepads, and evaluations on 100% recycled-content paper
- Asked speakers to provide electronic handouts only
- Posted event information and presentations online
- Collected name badges for reuse
- Provided recycling in all rooms
Meals and Catering Waste Minimization
- Provided glass drinking glasses for lunch
- Encouraged mugs and water bottles
- Encouraged mug/cup reuse by providing a "Reuse" table outside the lecture hall
- Served drinks in reusable pitchers rather than bottled drinks
- Used cloth tablecloths
- Used recycled-content napkins
- Served lunch in compostable boxes
- Served sugar, honey, and cream cheese in bulk rather than in individual portions
- Donated extra food to youth shelter in Oakland
Food Sourcing
- Served local honey, organic sugar, and organic tea
- Requested local/organic ingredients from caterer, Blue Heron, certified Green Business
- Offered vegetarian and vegan options
