Examination will be held by appointment with applicant.

A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 4:30 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Postmarks are not accepted. Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

THE POSITION(S): The Coroner's Investigator I is assigned in the Sheriff's Department - Coroner's Bureau and is an entry-level peace officer classification in which staff works with journey-level investigators. This is a flexibly-staffed classification. After successfully completing the Special Requirements and gaining experience and knowledge of the legal codes pertaining to Coroner's cases, staff is expected to qualify for promotion to Coroner's Investigator II within one year. The staff works under a Supervising Coroner's Investigator or the Unit Commander of the Coroner's Bureau. Typical duties may include inspection of bodies and premises where traumatic or unexpected deaths have occurred; removal and/or assistance in the removal of these bodies to the County Morgue; caring for property of deceased persons; assisting pathologists in autopsies; preparation of Coroner's Investigator reports and records for burial of the indigent and unclaimed dead; subpoenaing jurors and witnesses; preparing for and assisting with inquests. The Coroner's Investigator I will be required to work various shifts and performs other related duties as assigned.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: Coroner's Investigator I is a flexibly-staffed position and may advance after a one-year satisfactory probationary period to: Coroner's Investigator II - $2165.60 - Current Bi-weekly Maximum

THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the examination, which is competitive. Possession of the entrance requirements does not assure a place on the eligible list. A candidate's performance in the examination will be judged in comparison with the performance of other candidates.

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency certificate, such as the General Education Development certificate (State of California) AND

EITHER I

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of one year of full-time experience as a Coroner's Aide II with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office-Coroner's Bureau.

OR II

EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified Basic Academy.

OR III

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of two years of full-time experience in a related field such as: Licensed Embalmer, Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic, or Pathology Assistant.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of training in the laws of arrest as mandated in Section 832 of the California Penal Code, successful completion of an approved Coroner's Death Investigation Course and the ability to type 25 words per minute within the first year of employment. Physical ability to lift dead bodies weighing a minimum of 160 pounds and remove them from the scene of death using acceptable removal techniques. Successful completion of a thorough background investigation. A record of any felony conviction will result in disqualification. Applicants must be in excellent physical condition with above average strength, endurance and agility, and must meet Commission approved peace officer standards. A Computer Voice Stress Analyzer examination will also be included in the process to assess candidates' responses in the areas of drug use, driving history, honesty, racial discrimination, and sexual harassment.

AGE: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

LICENSE: All candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

VISION: Candidates must have visual acuity of not less than 20/70 in both eyes without glasses, corrected with glasses to not less than 20/30; and must be free from color-blindness and have no permanent abnormality of either eye.

HEARING: Hearing must be normal in each ear.

CITIZENSHIP: Candidates who are not citizens of the United States must have filed for citizenship before applying for Coroner Investigator I.

THE EXAMINATION: THIS IS A NEW CONTINUOUS EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and will last approximately one year but may be extended. This examination may be reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates merged onto the existing list according to examination score.

The examination may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF interviewing and investigative techniques and procedures; sources for identifying and locating persons; standard techniques for gathering and preserving physical evidence; basic medical terminology; California Penal Code, Government Code, Health and Safety Code and other codes relating to the function, jurisdiction and authority of the Coroner. ABILITY TO exercise good judgment in analyzing evidence and drawing conclusions from it; extract pertinent information from police and medical reports; organize clear and comprehensive Coroner's reports using correct English, grammar and spelling; deal tactfully with next of kin; and maintain effective relations with law enforcement agencies, other County departments, public and private organizations, and the general public.

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF the following five steps: A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process, a review of candidates' Supplemental Questionnaires to verify further knowledge, skill or ability. The next step is a written test which will be weighted as 30% of the candidate's final examination score. Those candidates scoring highest on the written test will move on to the next steps in the examination process, a performance test which will be qualifying only, and an oral interview which will be weighted as 70% of the candidate's final examination score.
