Fires
A fire can happen anywhere, at any time, and can quickly suffocate you with smoke and toxic fumes. Don't be caught unprepared.
Before
- Learn how to put out fires quickly and completely
- Purchase fire extinguishers (ABC type)
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your house, especially in or near bedrooms
- Thin trees and brush around your home
- Store flammable materials, liquids, and solvents in metal containers at least 30 feet away from your home
- Stack firewood at least 30 feet from your home
- Purchase ladders than can reach second-story windows if needed
- Practice using the PASS method for fire extinguishers
- Pull the pin
- Aim at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep back and forth
- Check for other fire hazards in and around your home
- Make sure you have two ways out of each room in case one is blocked
During
- Evacuate immediately
- Stay low to the ground and crawl to the exit
- Test doors for heat before opening. If the door is cool and smoke is not visible, move through quickly and close the door behind you. Otherwise, do not open the door
- Call 911
- If on fire, stop, drop, and roll
- If you are unable to escape:
- Seal the cracks around the door with damp towels
- Stay low to the ground and close to a window
- Signal for help by waving something out the window
