New Shuttle from Bay Fair BART Connects Public and Employees to County Services

Alameda County employees and residents can now take advantage of convenient shuttle service to Alameda County's Fairmont Hospital and Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro (as well as the Bay Fair Mall) from the Bay Fair BART station. The shuttle service runs on a 20-minute loop from 6:30AM to 7:00PM Monday through Friday. See the schedule (PDF - 44kb) * and route map (PDF - 90kb) *.

In just the first week of operation in mid-April 2010, the shuttle served more than 90 riders each day. The County aims to have the shuttle, which runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), serve 175-200 riders daily.

The service is affiliated with the County's new Clean Commute Program, a program providing services and incentives to encourage County employees to leave their cars at home or carpool to work. Transportation accounts for 54% of the County's greenhouse gas emissions. The shuttle program is a means of connecting employees and the general public between our County facilities and local BART stations. This is a step towards reducing our carbon footprint from transportation.

The shuttle will be free to Alameda County employees and residents for the first year. The free service has been made possible through a $170,000 grant from the Alameda County Congestion Management Authority, which operates separately from the County government. The County will continue to look for additional funding for subsequent years. An AC Transit bus (line # 93) served part of this route until March 28, 2010, when its service was reduced. Although Alameda County does not manage AC Transit bus service, the County wishes to serve AC Transit's former customers in this region.

This is the second shuttle service that the County has launched in the past year. Since October 2009, a shuttle service has been successfully serving County employees commuting from Lake Merritt and 12th St. BART stations to the County headquarters and surrounding offices.
