My Story

Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell has served the Oakland Unified School District for 25 years in various roles. She led the building of a nationally-recognized Community Schools model, a nationally recognized computer/internet access program during the COVID pandemic, the advent of community-based Transitional Kindergarten literacy tutoring, the expansion of career pathways and Dual Enrollment with local colleges, and retention and expansion of educators of color. This has resulted in increased achievement at all levels, and graduation rates have increased by 5 percentage points to nearly 75%, with significantly higher rate increases of nearly 12 percentage points for African American students, now up to a 81.7% graduation rate.
